I also have the same problem. Intel i7-620LM, OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (in the i7). So this doesn't seem to be a NVidia issue. The sleeping workaround didn't work for me (starting a gnome-session without a gnome-panel nor metacity, but with compiz and avant-window-navigator). I ended up replacing gdm by kdm, which worked perfectly.
