Definitely related to SSDs. Installed 10.04 and 10.10 on HDD and SDD.
Occured only on the latter, in vanilla setup.

** (gnome-settings-daemon:1941): WARNING **: You can only run one xsettings 
manager at a time; exiting
** (gnome-settings-daemon:1941): WARNING **: Unable to start xsettings manager: 
Could not initialize xsettings manager.

My workaround so far is to kill gsd and nautilus manually:

killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon && gnome-settings-daemon && killall
nautilus
