Not certain the underlying cause of this behavior is gnome-screensaver because I believe this behavior started just a few weeks ago, but the package manager says the last update to this package was released 2010-05-26. I may be wrong but I believe I started seeing this behavior in early July. I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04. Just a quick glance through the packages in my cache shows some libpam updates that came through about that time, so I wonder if it's a pam issue? I see pam had a security update to version 1.1.1-2ubuntu5 on July 7.
