Could you try to provide more information on the step, where it goes wrong for you? Please have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SuspendHowto and "Processing of events" to understand the process better. Which handlers (powersave, pmi,...) are avaiable for you? Does echo disk > /sys/power/state and /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh on console (no X, ctrl-alt-f1) work for you? Why do you think it's HAL fault?
