I am running 10.04 (final) on a MacBook Pro 5,5 and the workaround described by Harm and pauls does not work. Even though after resume from suspend the screen is clearly on maximum brightness, both /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/mbp_backlight/brightness and /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/mbp_backlight/actual_brightness contain the value "5" (or whatever I set via the brightness keys).
