Thanks Harm. I forgot that "!=" is for strings and strings require quotes. I guess I should have used "-ne" instead and it probably would have worked. My script failed to set brightness to 7 on a subsequent boot and I had the dim display upon resume again. But, after changing it, it seems to always work now.
