recognised and rewarded with the freedom to make hard decisions and not
get second-guessed all the time."

You say yourself that you "should", not that you necessarily do.
Perhaps the fact that your other teams do make their changes without
getting such prominent push-back means that, just maybe, for this issue,
you don't.

You're right; One project isn't a democracy.  Popularity, though, by
definition is.  Is this issue more important than Bug #1?
