After some more playing around, I discovered that the timeout value of 0 in gpilotd-control-applet was causing gpilot to hang at the end of the sync. I changed that timeout to 4 seconds and now gpilotd can perform multiple syncs without having to be killed and restarted. I had changed it to 0 seconds due to another message somewhere saying that was a recommended fix for some of these USB sync issues. I rebooted just to see if that would help with the gpilotd GUIs... and now it's working! I've done 5 correct syncs in a row via gnome-pilot's standard GUI interfaces.
So it does appear that moving to the 2.6.17.x kernel is what corrected the issue for me too. -Rob -- Robert W.
