Tonight I tested a full restore of my palm device. First I synced it with gnome-pilot, which worked correctly from the GUI. Next I cleared the memory on the device. The restore results were disappointing. The restore began properly, then the progress bars started flashing back and forth wildly, then the palm disconnected and the progress window appeared to be hung. I could not close the window. I eventually killed gnome-pilot-applet and gpilotd. I started gpilotd manually without gnome-pilot-applet and the restore appeared to be going much better. After several minutes the palm reported that it was complete and prompted me to reset the device, but gpilotd appeared to be hung still trying to transfer data. When I reset the device, it got a fatal exception during bootup. This problem was no doubt because the restore was only partially completed.
Needless to say it appears this process is still far too flaky to be my primary means of backing up the device. Once again for reference this is while running the 2.6.17.6 kernel on an up-to-date dapper drake. -Rob -- Robert W.
