Alexander, thanks for the reply and the reasoning. For your reference,
the best result I can achieve BY FAR, is using the following:

- Default fonts (Sans) and dpi
- Autohinter enabled as I commented on comment #5 
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fontconfig/+bug/349850/comments/5).
 The local.conf file is not really necessary; I use it because bold fonts looks 
better (not so big, as I posted on bug #349869).
- In System->Preferences->Appearance, Fonts tab:
  - Rendering = Best shapes
  - In Details:
    - Resolution = 96 dots per inch
    - Smoothing = Grayscale
    - Hinting = Medium
    - Subpixel Order = RGB

With the above settings, my font looking is far better than default.
