It is an attempt to find a colour which (a) looks like a base colour for the Ubuntu Lagoon image, which is what pops up over that, and (b) looks good as a backing for the new Gnome splash. If you have a suggestion, make it and I will look at it. Otherwise, please mark this bug as rejected.
