I really took interest in fixing this and it seems I finally hit the root of the problem. Thanks to you all for your comments and trials, as without the hint on gnome-power-manager I would never have though of such a thing. The community is always great!
If others having this problem confirm that it disappears with no BIOS password, probably the best thing is to open a new bug against HAL with concise infos. I'll be glad to do it myself tomorrow if nothing new shows up here.
