Sorry. My problem was not related to having ESD disabled, it was because I have decided to install qtparted which installed some qt/kde related libs. Gaim was using the Autodetect option which I guess will make it to try to use arts (I guess there was some qtparted dependency related to it). I have gone into the gaim options, changed it to ESD and it works fine now.
