Tweaking JunkMail is an ongoing project. There may never be a time when you think, "There, I've finished configuring it." If you want the best results you can expect to tweak it for a few months, at least.
The best advice I can give is to keep up with this list and to browse the archives. Everyone weights differently and uses different tests. Generally no two configs are the same. I started out with the defaults for a while, and then dipped my big toe into the tweaking waters by just changing weights. Then I got brave and added a few new tests (nothing too difficult though, no 'custom' tests). I would definitely advise you to use Sniffer (www.sortmonster.com) as an external test, as it is well worth the low subscription cost. Finally, I began adding a couple of custom tests, (such as Image FX's excellent kill list, weighted). I actually went from a two-level to a three-level config last week (added a SUBJECT action for lower weights, delete the highest weights). Now I'm back to changing weights and adding to custom white- and black-list FROMFILES. I'm still not done, and don't think I ever will be. Now I am actually comfortable (brave) enough to make small config changes based on information gleaned from posts to this list. You just have to get comfortable with the software, the methods, and the terminology. All of which takes time, but reading this list daily will definitely do the trick!
