Unfortunately it seems that the described workaround with EXANoComposite did not help because I had some X server crashes again over the last few days. I will try the other workaround with AccelMethod now and if this does not work too, I will have to look for a more stable distribution like e.g. Cent OS (they still use the elder 1.1.1 version of X server which was included in Debian Etch and which worked flawlessly on my machine).
