Here is additional information:
* No xorg.conf, no synaptics
In fact, without any xorg.conf, the synaptics driver is not loaded.
Considering that the driver provides expected functionality (scrolling), the
fact that it is not loaded is a bug (for me, so I rise the severity to
normal).
* reconfigured xorg.conf, no synaptics
I then tried to reconfigure my xorg.conf using # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
which hadn't configured the synaptics driver.
The simplest configuration which allowed me to have right-side scrolling was
the following (simply added lines):
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "CorePointer"
EndSection
Then, with that lines in the xorg.conf (before or after the normal "Configured
mouse" is of no importance thanks to the CorePointer option - otherwise, it
should be put first), I get normal right-side scrolling and fully normal
comportment with an external USB mouse.
So, in both cases, the above configuration should be used (either without
xorg.conf or in the xorg.conf generated by dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg).
