The bug report is at http://bugs.debian.org/365347. Basically, X displays only noise and confuses the graphics card enough that a hard reboot is required (not even SRM reinitializing the card suffices). Unfortunately, I cannot really easily reboot this machine, since it has long-running jobs (Debian buildd). So I'd be grateful for any suggestions how to debug this more systematic...
