  I checked again and found that not.  The XF86Config-4 config file
was left untouched (dating from May 2004) by my dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86.  I do not know why (as I have not changed it by
hand).  I purged (xfree86-common, a bit strong cure) and reinstalled
x-window-system-core.  The coming hours will tell me if that way the
bug has vanished (I have kept a copy of the old /etc/X11 directory).
I will let you know (I am currently trying with DRI).  I mention my
way here in case it were a solution for the bug submitter.
