Your first suggestion was wrong -- I don't know of a single case where just "ISO-8859" is accepted -- but your parenthetical was fine. You can consult the X11 files: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.dir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias and the glibc files: /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED /etc/locale.alias ...to determine what locale names are supported by these systems. A recent big SVN commit (r1731) adds a tremendous amount of parity between X11 and glibc on Debian. -- G.
