I know I need to follow up to the rest of your message, but my understanding is that GNOME has been "hosed" lately. I use aptitude as an apt-get wrapper (i.e., I don't use the ncurses GUI), and I've certainly noticed some GNOME library packages having difficulty upgrading lately.
