There is no such file as "XFree". I assume you mean "XFree86".
In the Dialog box indicating the above error,
What program produced this dialog box?
it says it is probably an internal X Server error.
That's pretty misleading. It's far more like an XKB configuration problem,
or a bug in the XKB data. I am reassigning this bug accordingly.
-recently upgraded my machine from "testing" version to "unstable"
version which is what probably caused this error.
Possibly.
-attempting to use the following keyboard inputs:
-french canadian
-english canadian
-us
-japanese
-I also noticed the copy/paste capability between emacs and mozilla no
longer works.
-I also noticed my japanese keyboard input capability from within
mozilla no longer works when doing shift-space.
The above two things are separate reports; please file them separately
against the "mozilla" package. If the problem is really with X, they'll be
reassigned to it.
-As requested from the dialog:
# xprop -root |grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "us", "", ""
# gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
layouts = [us,ca_enhanced,jp]
model = pc104
overrideSettings = false
options = []
Okay, so you're trying to switch between 3 different layouts.
Do the following commands work?:
$ setxkbmap us
$ setxkbmap ca_enhanced
$ setxkbmap jp
They seem to be doing something but when I am in a standard gnome terminal, us
keyboard works. ca_enhanced works.
setxkbmap jp does something but not what I would expect.
It remaps my "'" to "<" for example.
When I shift+space it doesn't go into japanese keyboard input. I tried using
emacs, mozilla and kterm and nothing changes to kana input.
I apologize for being so foggy about this it's just that it was working before I
did this update and when the update happened to go to the unstable version it
was realizing the consequences of this :)
Something weird happened with gnome-session, gnome-control-center, and c-applets
and they seemed not to update to the corresponding "unstable" version. I
tried in aptitude shift-L to update/repair right? The same error happens and
they don't get updated. My gut feeling is that somehow this has affect my
keyboard stuff. Everything is I am absolutely sure is ok because when I search
for ~b in aptitude for the broken packages, there is nothing except libmagick
that's broken because I installed sun java and the eclipse and it affected it
somehow.
I tried both gnome and KDE desktops and it is the same thing. No japanese
keyboard input and worse the mouse copy/paste was affected.
Thanks for taking the time to consider my request.
Cheers.
