Hmm. Sounds like the database is being recomputed by each application, which is not supposed to happen. Could it be that you've got a ~/.fonts.cache-1 file which is owned by the wrong user? Next time things seem slow, try: $ FC_DEBUG=432 fc-list foo That will generate information about why the cache is broken. -keith
