I have found with some help from editres that it now only responds to
the face resource or the corresponding -fa flag (a change that seems
to be undocumented); on my desktop,

    XClock*face: fixed-9:width=semicondensed

yields the same font I got with "XClock*font: fixed" under 4.2.1.
