I've been having the same problem. I noticed that /var/log/XFree86.0.log was complaining:
| FreeType: couldn't open face /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/VeraMoBd.ttf: 85 When I removed purged vera, the Vera* fonts located above persisted. I removed these manually. That didn't solve the problem either. Instead I now a slightly different error everytime I typed xfontsel. | FreeType: couldn't open face /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/VeraMoBd.ttf: 1 I then apt-get --reinstall install defoma, then installed vera.
