I am using an IBM Thinkpad T20, also running the Savage IX MV video Chip. As with Xavier, I am having problems with 4.2.1-6 that are resolved by downgrading to 4.2.1-5, also exhibiting the same error messages.
The difference is that, running KDE, the KDM greet screen comes up, I can log in, and run KDE, but every time something is updated on the display, the screen is temporarily corrupted. When update/movement on the display stops, the corruption is also gone. I haven't built/patched with Debian sources before, but if someone points me to a faq I'd be happy to compile it without the savage_driver.c patch to check the results. Justin
