Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.2.1-6
Since the last update, I can't use X on my laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite with a Savage IX MV video chip. I'm using vga mode 791 in console mode (to have a fullscreen terminal) With xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-6, when I launch /usr/bin/X11/X, I have not the grey and black screen. The screen remains black and I can see the mouse pointer. If I switch to a console and then back to X, I can see the text that was on the console. In X logfile I have this error : (EE) SAVAGE(0): Failed to fetch any BIOS modes. Disabling BIOS. When I downgrade to 4.2.1-5 this message disapears and instead I have the list of the available video modes. I can then upgrade to 4.2.1-6 and it will work until the next reboot. I think the problem is one of the modifications in 4.2.1-6 : * patch #000_stolen_from_HEAD_savage_driver: (savage_driver.c): No need to softboot twice; reduces startup time. (Alan Hourihane) I don' have time to compile XFree without this patch, but it's the only change that seems to affect my system. I'm using Debian GNU/Linux Sid, Homemade kernel 2.4.20 with framebuffer. Except for the xserver-xfree86, the system is up to date (I made an apt-get update/dist-upgrade on ftp.debian.org) The hardware is a Celeron 500, Savage IX MV, 1024*768 LCD display. -- Xavier Henner URL: <http://www.euclide.org/>
