Well before X4 debs existed at all, I had a method (put together specifically for getting nVidia cards working with debian) for instaling X4 from source so that it sits in a seperate tree, alongside your normal debian X3.3.6 install. I wrote a quick HOWTO (basically for members of my local LUG), which is at:
