Thanks for coming back to me so quickly!

I'll try the "fbdev" driver on the machine in question this coming week and 
will 
send an update.

If I can't get a high enough screen resolution (the monitor is 1680*1050) or if 
the performance is particularly poor, I'm prepared to work with someone to dig 
deeper into this; be it reporting the bug upstream or passing on of logs, etc.

Let me know if anything else is required on this.

probably hung GPU, which you could check by looking into kernel logs.
