Yes, you are right. The machine which has this problem has an xinitrc which does not source /etc/X11/Xsession. It is attached. I have never edited the file, at least not as far as I recall. Since the file is marked as a conffile, I would expect to see an /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.dpkg-dist, but it is not there either. I have no idea why it was not replaced with the new version.
