Yes, because you have one. You *should* use .xsession instead of .xinitrc. If you choose not to, startx works as documented in its manpage. I'll also note that grepping is a pretty poor way to figure out how startx works. I suggest reading the script instead. Also read /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc.
