At first, I just had to manually fix the backspace/delete issue (this was a minor irritation). Now, however, my Alt key by default seems to be generating an Alt keysym rather than a Meta keysym as is customary on PC keyboards. I've "fixed" this using gdm by adding the following to /etc/gdm/Init/Default: /usr/bin/X11/xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = BackSpace' \ -e 'remove Mod1 = Alt_L' \ -e 'keycode 0x40 = Meta_L' \ -e 'add Mod4 = Meta_L' While this has the desired effect that emacs, etc, see my left Alt key as a Meta key, X now ignores the left alt key so I need to make sure to use the right Alt key to switch VTs, kill X, etc. This behaviour occurs independant of whether I use startx or gdm to start X up. So I guess what I'm asking is, what might have gotten messed up that would cause this behavior (I'm pretty sure I haven't messed with any of the system-wide config files and my setup works on all other machines, including Debian ones) and/or what should I do to revert the configuration? The dpkg man page doesn't seem to suggest how I would force it to reinstall ie /etc/X11/xkb (--confnew doesn't do it). Apologies if this is confusing. -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Kernel Version: Linux KeyserSoze.snurgle.org 2.4.0-test10 #2 SMP Sun Nov 5 13:59:27 EST 2000 i686 unknown
