Again thanks for all the good suggestions. Now (two nights and multiple power on/offs later) the debian site works, without changing IE!! I don't see any characters to the left of "(Hangul)" but IE does not crash!
Conclusion: I had one of those temporary gremlins that occasionally infest Windows!
