I too am willing to trust the judgement of the web team in picking the background and other esthetic issues.
As an academic point, black type on a white background is the highest contrast you can arrive at for the _luminance_ sensing cells of the eye, which have at least two times the resolution of the color sensing cells. Thus, using a primary color and its compliment is _not_ better than black on white. Black type on a white background looks clearer than white on black. With white type on a black background, the iris opens wider because of the lower average luminance and focus is worse. Thanks Bruce -- Can you get your operating system fixed when you need it?
