I thought the idea of Debian Women was, at least in part, to give a safe space
where men wouldn't laugh at you?? ;-)

nVidia Corporation nForce2 AC97 Audio Controler (on board)

I have checked. I am already there.

Now this I haven't done. I tried, but I couldn't fathom how to work it - or
even how to interpret it.

How do I check this?

Eureka!

# modprobe OSS
FATAL: Module OSS not found.
#

But how on earth did it play sound before? Or how did OSS get unloaded?

Yes - and making unpleasant white noise. :-(

# modprobe snd-pcm-oss

# aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian,
Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

The quality of the white noise didn't change at all.

I have also had sound both previously in Lenny on this same box, and for
several years in Etch and Sarge before it.

I obviously have to reload OSS. But that will involve a fair amount of
Googling, and I am falling asleep here. (I'm useless after midnight.)

Thanks very much for your help.
