This protocol, CoAP, is developed in the IETF working group "CoRE", <http://6lowapp.net> and was standardized in RFC 7252. The libcoap library has been evolved and has now reached the API version 3 which includes changes that makes the library not backward compatible. To keep the packages from libcoap3 co-installable to the current upstream version of libcoap will go into a new source package.
