Why not? Imagine people who's further decision on supporting Debian depends on the Debian decision regarding non-free. One can think the way Debian can got a lot of supporters will be to make Social Contract as wide as possible. One of your arguments was something like "We attract those who work on non-free, so they work on free also. If Debian will drop non-free, it will lost support of those who work on non-free."
