I doubt that most vendors can actually get hold of Windows-free machines. MS or the manufacturer gets paid for all the rubbishware they put on the computer, and certainly MS monetises the various data it collects from Win10 and Win11. Telemetry, sure. Games and other stuff that used to be thrown in are now third-party and require payment, and you can be certain MS takes a slice. These days the software is more or less free to domestic users, and the profit comes from advertising and selling data. Last time I started up a new Windows, there were various 'privacy' options. One assured me that if I chose not to get targeted advertisements, I'd still get untargeted ones. I'm glad none of my other tools come with compulsory advertising. -- Joe
