I did apologise for the rather lengthy string that I've used.
If you refer back to the penultimate paragraph of:

which, to save your time, though it lengthens the thread,
I'll quote here:

 "Similarly, I've always locked down my mc configuration,

  I also load a fixed bash_history file with each xterm,
  so history added during the day is thrown away when

  rather prolix /bin/su --login above.)"

it may provide a clue as to why I only have to type:

  /↑ Return

to switch to root. If /↑ doesn't yield the line /bin/su --login,
then holding down the ↑ key certainly will. IOW, that line is
the only line starting with / in the bash_history file.
