It's true I'm fixated on the order of installation because that was flow of events the OP recounted. We still are unaware if my simple fix might indeed be a fix (in the OP's specific case). But I admit the complexity of the situation is beyond the scope of my knowledge or even my patience. That it should be so complex to choose the default browser I find at once disheartening and ludicrous.
