Indeed, SMTP and NNTP are quite different and can't be expected to cross pollinate. However, in Emacs and Linux, all things are possible, in theory. So, with a little experimentation, and some regrettable spam, I was able to use posting-styles and hooks in Gnus and read posts via usenet and then follow-up to said post without switching interfaces.
