mtp is media transfer protocol, an alternative to USB Mass
Storage. Hence thunar volume manager.

MTP likely may be ignored. There is a little chance though that its udev rule sends something to the device. When installed, this rule executed for most of (or even for all) plugged USB devices.

Perhaps vendor software sends some commands to the serial port when print is requested.
