Probably only really meant to show us when we are setting an alarm at night, for the morning, that the dot is on one and off on the other. Else we'll wake a little late.

Remember the joke about going to bed at 8 and setting the alarm on a wind-up clock for 9 - we wouldn't get much sleep.
