You should undo that.  There's no reason to switch your philosophy at

I said that SOME PEOPLE use hostnames with dots in them, and that IF you
are one of those people, there's an extra step to perform.

Confusing, miss leading man pages are a lot of it. If the domainname command is only for NIS systems, whatever the hell that means, the first line of the man page should plainly state VALID FOR NIS SYSTEMS ONLY.
