there is no distribution. there are only packages which work together or don't. one might point to the debian installer as the package that draws the others in, but the debian installer is not actually required to have a functional, recognizable, and even 'orthodox' debian system. one might point to the mighty apt and dpkg manipulators, but they are not the distribution either. ftp, wget, curl can acquire the packages. a sufficient number of manipulations with a de-archiver and some shell scripting can install a package properly. is the de-archiver the distribution? no. the flight of the flock of swallows is real, but it is not a thing. the debian distribution is the flight of a flock of packages. -dsr-
