The cradle is basically a one-key keyboard and a fancy connector cable
for your palm.  The palm doesn't bother to turn on it's port (and thus
become detectable) until it's in the cradle and the button is pressed.

On a side note, I really like kpilot, it synchs nicely with KOrganizer.
