The equivalent happens with non-devfs systems as well.  /dev/ttyUSB[01] 
becomes "real" serial ports only after the PDA initiates a connection 
(either through HotSync or Network). 

Don't know why that is so. I think this behaviour is common to all
PalmOS devices with USB cradles.
