Beyond that, I tend to rely on guidance from others. As you go on to say, purging/reinstalling (paraphrasing, I know) is not really a 'Linuxy' thing to do. The reason for Brian patiently walking me through some diagnostics is because he's involved with the dev team. At least I think he is. Either way, he clearly knows his stuff, and managed to demotrate that; a) the printer is fine b) cabling is good c) networking is good Since v3.19.12 still works, I'll probably reinstall that, and have done with it for the time being.
