AFS is a distributed file system. My uni uses it (among other things) to allow access to user directories across platforms -- I can mount my $HOME on Windows, Mac, or *nix, from anywhere on the Internet. In Linux, it needs a kernel module to work, though (for obvious reasons). It's pretty handy when you have something like 60,000 users... -- Pax vobiscum; pax cum omnibus.
