They are not going away (at least not as long as there are people maintaining them, hint, hint). It won't work always (e.g. if your provider doesn't... provide reverse IP lookup *neither* ip -r *nor* route from net-tools will do what you want!). Debian can't declare *every* package as essential: I hope you understand that.
