Indeed. it sounds like it's not the problem: the system *is* finding some boot device it isn't happy with. And this boot device is most probably (not 100%, but close ;) the freshly-prepared USB stick. So I'd say first go for the stick (how it was prepared, etc.) then go for the BIOS.
